Street facing house, Karaikudi.
PhotographAbout this record
A single street house in the Chettinad town of Karaikudi, built around 1915 by a trading family. The plan runs deep from a narrow street front, through a raised veranda, a first courtyard for visitors, and a second courtyard for the family.
We measured the house over four days in May 2026, with the owners present. The walls are brick set in lime, finished with a smooth lime plaster. The floor of the front hall is Athangudi tile, laid in a repeating pattern. The main door is teak, carved on the street side, with iron studs.
The drawings record the full plan, two sections and the street elevation. The photographs follow the same order as a visitor would walk the house, from the street to the back. One recorded talk with the owner is held with this record, in Tamil, with an English summary.
The family told us the back courtyard may be sold. We returned in June 2026 to check the drawings against the building before any change.
