A morning walk through three streets of Chettinad merchant houses. We will look at courtyard plans, Athangudi tile floors, carved teak doors, and the relationship between the house and the street. Led by the survey team that recorded fourteen houses on this street in May.
A walk through the older commercial streets of Coimbatore, looking at shop fronts, warehouses, and the civic buildings built in the early twentieth century. We will discuss how a market street is planned and how its buildings reflect the trades that occupied them.
A walk through the concentric streets surrounding the Meenakshi temple, looking at the relationship between the temple precinct and the residential and commercial buildings that grew around it. Houses, choultries, and shop rows, built over three centuries.
A walk through a residential neighbourhood in Pollachi, looking at timber-framed courtyard houses and the workshops of carpenters and metalworkers. We will meet a carpenter whose family has built doors in Pollachi for three generations.
