Kalanjiyam
Towards a Kalanjiyam.
களஞ்சியம்
Kalanjiyam: a storehouse
Kalanjiyam (களஞ்சியம்) is a Tamil word for a storehouse: a place where something of value is gathered and kept safely.
HAF is building a Kalanjiyam for India's architectural memory. It is meant as a long-term repository where knowledge of heritage buildings is kept, organised and connected, so that it can still be found and used decades from now.
Over time it is meant to bring together:
- HAF's own documentation of buildings
- photographs, videos and drawings
- books, research and historical records
- digital material
- material entrusted by individuals and institutions
The aim is that anyone who needs to know what a building was, how it looked, how it was built and what happened to it can reliably begin with the Kalanjiyam.
Where it stands today
The Kalanjiyam is being built, and the archive on this page is where it begins. How material will be catalogued, how its origin will be recorded, how it will be kept for the long term, and who will be able to see what are all being worked out now.
If you hold photographs, drawings, books or records of a heritage building, we would be glad to hear about them.
